So I’ve recently been feeling like working on updating my coding skills, and tired of the age old practice of uploading files, tweaking, and re-uploading, I finally decided to install WordPress locally on my laptop. Yes, you read that right, I just now decided to do this (cringe). Anyway, I wasn’t sure how easy it would be on a Mac, so I broke out my Google-fu and looked it up. Turns out it’s really easy, and I’m now kicking myself for not having done it sooner.
I found this super handy tutorial over at the WordPress Codex of all places. Shocking I know. See, all this time I’ve been uploading a starter base or old theme into WordPress, enabling it for admin view only, and tweaking, refreshing, tweaking, refreshing, rinse and repeat for hours in WordPress. When all along all I needed to do was download this easy to use, free application called MAMP that would run a self hosted server on my laptop. Then all I do is change the settings following the super easy tutorial, install WordPress and BAM! super easy, no internet required, WordPress coding goodness.
And just incase you run into the issue I had while working on this, if you shut down MAMP and restart it, but it won’t connect to either PHP, MySQL, or both, simply quit MAMP again, open terminal and put in:
killall -9 mysqld
Then restart MAMP and all should be well.
Now I just need to find some inspiration. Anyone have a favorite place they go to for design inspiration?
